Partial Beast Reconstruction Techniques in Oncoplastic Surgery
Book authors: Albert Losken and Moustapha Hamdi Publisher: Quality Medical Publishing, Inc., St Louis, Mo, 2009 The American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery   Vol. 27, No. 1,2010 This textbook is a cooperative venture between Dr Losken, who practices at the Emery University School of Medicine in Georgia, and Dr Hamdi, a professor at Gent University Hospital in Belgium. Other contributors include cosmetic, plastic, reconstructive, and oncologic surgeons from throughout the world. This book is the result of a recent interdisciplinary international breast conference. The conference, attended by breast specialists from multiple disciplines around the world, provided, in an easy to read organized format, information and knowledge about oncoplastic surgery not previously categorized. The term oncoplastic surgery refers to a relatively new approach to breast cancer and other oncologic problems that coordinates oncologic and reconstructive techniques.

Section One discusses "The Evolution of Oncoplastic Surgery," "Fundamentals of Oncoplastic Breast Surgery," "Current Approach to Oncoplastic Breast Surgery—The European Experience," "Current Approach to Oncoplastic Breast Surgery—The American Experience," and "How to Incorporate Oncoplastic Surgery Into Your Practice."

"Principles and Considerations of Oncoplastic Breast Conservation" are presented in detail. Other chapters discuss "Applied Anatomy and Breast Aesthetics," "Breast Conserving Therapy," "Breast Conserving Therapy: Decision Making and Anticipating the Unfavorable Aesthetic Result," "Oncologic

Safety of the Oncoplastic Approach," "Improving the Partial Mastectomy Deformity," "Improving the Quadrantectomy Defect," "Anticipating Breast Radiotherapy After Oncoplastic Surgery," "Indications and Benefits of Oncoplastic Breast Surgery," "Designing the Oncoplastic Operation, Timing the Oncoplastic Reconstruction," and "Psychosocial Aspects of Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction."

The section on Immediate Partial Breast Reconstruction includes chapters on "Reduction and Mastopexy Techniques" and "Tissue Replacement Using Flaps."

In Section Four, Correction of the Breast Conserving Therapy Deformity: Delayed Partial Breast Reconstruction, chapters discuss "Classification and Analysis of the Breast Conserving Therapy Deformity," "Re-arrangement Surgery," "Correction of the Breast Conserving Therapy Deformity Using Local Flaps," "Perforator Flap Reconstruction of Breast Conserving Therapy Deformities," "Lipo-aspirate Transplant in the Breast Conserving Therapy Deformity," and "Can Implants Correct the Breast Conserving Therapy Deformity?"

The final section in the book contains chapters on "Cancer Surveillance After Partial Breast Reconstruction," "Complications and Outcomes After Immediate Partial Breast Reconstruction," and "Outcomes and Tumor Recurrence After Oncoplastic Surgery of the Breast."

This book brings together concepts of oncology and reconstruction in a single, well-organized, and readable text that will allow the general surgeon with limited reconstructive experience to better coordinate surgical techniques with a reconstructive surgeon. In addition, immediate application of the techniques discussed in this book at the time of surgery can minimize the mastectomy defect without compromising tumor excision. Each chapter is well written in a narrative format. Multiple high-color, detailed, high-quality photographs and graphs and tables illustrate the information contained within. Multiple before and after photographs of patients help to illustrate the outcomes of the described techniques. Of specific value for the oncologic, oncoplastic, and reconstructive surgeon are the multiple decision-making algorithms provided. A high-quality DVD illustrates many of the procedures discussed in this book.
